Tom: cheers for that film suggestion. I just watched 'er. 'After the Montreal Massacre' really put that tragic event in perspective. It's hard to believe being a dickhead and shouting at women (wimmin!) as you drive by, or saying stupid shit to your buddies can lead to this sort of disaster, but it can and it did. Makes me wish I would have acted on my impulses, back when I played competitive hockey, to fuckin' Happy Gilmore skate-assault those ignorant fucking pubic hairs telling fuckheaded jokes.

Oh! I'd also like to give you a belated handjob for giving Hiretsukan the respect it deserves a few posts ago. Like I said before, I do take musical props on comments here seriously, and like a fool with an incredibly small penis, I had failed to really listen to Hiretsukan up until that point. Well, after reading your post I got my hands on 'End States' and fuck a hat it's goddamn amazing.

Thanks again...Cheese Eater.

I'm a citizen of the US, but am currently studying art in Quebec. Prior to last month, I had not heard of the significance of December 6th and I had known nothing of the 1989 Montreal Massacre.
It seems to me that an event like that goes to show the irrational and hateful reaction that social change tends to generate among those who've enjoyed a status they haven't earned atop a pillar of self-appointed supremacy. The Women's Movement, like many other movements, has challenged traditional modes of white/straight/male dominance in western culture, causing many deeply entrenched cheerleaders of the status quo to feel severely threatened by feminism.
An interested movie to see that explores the "backlash" phenomenon (among other facets of archetypal masculenity) is a documentary called Tough Guise.

Oops, this post shoud read:

"There was an awful opinion article in the national post that, from what I could tell, was about how it was a freak accident and men should NOT be blamed. So to answer your question, “fuck all” apparently."

sorry, I am an anti-proof-readist and a douche.

Very true. Nothing has changed in our thriving gun culture either, except for more shootings. Two very important issues that get cast aside as "isolated incidents". I did hear a mention of the montreal massacre today on the radio though, and a short mention of the provincial and federal gov'ts plan to cut crucial funding to women's groups.

UW as well is having (or rather had) a demonstration which includes spreading information and 13 women lying in the halls for 45 minutes, which is apparently the time it took Emergency to respond. Apparently tomorrow (friday dec8) there is a gathering at noon at winnipeg leg. to protect womens rights. I'm told the reason is Harper's government is removing language which ensures women's equality from some document. Sorry for the sketchy info, it's just word-o-mouth.

here is a link to a documentary that you should be able to find in your local public/university library:

www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c173.shtml

here in montreal, there are a few memorials happening, and of course the media treats this brutal assault as an isolated incident.
