this was really interesting - I feel like there's a lot to be learned from struggles like these. After my little continent-straddling adventure this year I finally got off my butt and read a bit about indigenous histories and struggles (I just got a copy of "In the spirit of Crazy Horse" for €5.99, beat that! ahem), which in turn got me reading some very interesting stuff about white privilege... Its incredible how completely oblivious about these things our privilege lets us remain. My jaw was on the floor when I first read about residential schools. I'm beginning to get nervous when I pick up a book that I'm suddenly going to uncover yet another horrific legacy of brutality and pain. Luckily I'm white and western and have cable comedy channels to distract me. Flippant rambling aside, I struggle with how best to support movements like these without succumbing to that charming "I'm white, I'll do the talking" tendency I've cringed at so many times, and how to gauge what constitutes appropriate solidarity from white "allies" generally.

In response to this post, I watched the film "Incident at Oglala" to give myself a further context as to what Brant is speaking to and up against.

Here is the link, if anyone is interested: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=387726205259162082&q=incident+in+oglala&total=4&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

Part two: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7478474397606955920&q=incident+in+oglala&total=4&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

EAGLE
I prepare for this one to make me flinch in disbelief, but nothing surprises me anymore.
Justice is dead.
We have brought pain.

A mind explosive.
A past undeniable.
Straight into ones eyes he looks -
A stare full of dignity.
A heart of hearts that is true.

Psychological penetration.
Violent repression.
515 years of genocide.

Why should they work with us?
We have always turned away.
In what we have created, they struggle just to breathe.

Soaring is the breeze of hope
to lead and guide the way.
Young, proud, inspired.
Heroes locked away.

I may not be surprised, but I feel something in the air and I stand in solidarity.

This guy's series of videos explains the situationhttp://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=caiaj (with Brant as speaker). The comments are standard Youtube fair...

As a non-Canadian i'm a bit lost in the history of all of this, and admittedly ignorant of the personal tension between natives and non-native Canadians.

.. I've only read a short part of the blog entry..so, I'm gunna go back to reading now.

we throw stones at antive people attempting to reach hospitals, we eradicate native heritage and culture through reform schools and land dispossesion, we lock up anyone who disagrees and is willing to stand up and fight.
