Taking crazy pills in the Middle East

Posted by D-Rock on 06/30/06 (Shite)

Hamas militants (soldiers, no?) kill two IDF soldiers and “abduct”, or “take hostage” (or is it “detain” or “arrest”?) another from Israel, try to use as a bargaining chip to have Palestinian women and children prisoners released. Israel responds by “arresting”, or “detaining” (or is it “abducting” or “taking hostage”?) 64 members of the Palestinian government (you know, elected officials? Can we do that to Stephen Harper?), stripping some of the right to live in their homes, and “pounding Gaza“, leaving 700,000 without power. Meanwhile, Israel currently holds about 9000 Palestinians prisoner, about 1000 of them with no charges whatsoever.

Thankfully, Israel “shows restraint” … even while firing missles into Gaza.

Norman Finkelstein and Josh Block discuss.

On a different note, Cpl. Joshua Belile, U.S. Marine and famed performing artist, known best for his heart-warming song “Hadji Girl”, will face no charges for his display of such songwriting prowess. Read the lyrics here. Cpl. Belile is “planning to produce a professional recording of the song.” No, that is not a joke.

Sources say his next single, titled “Alabama Porch Monkey Girl,” tells the tale of forbidden love between a vice cop in New York City and an African-American prostitute who he uses as a human-shield during a shoot-out with her crackhead gang-banger pimp.

The article above puts all this insanity into crystal-clear perspective. Plus, the dude who wrote it is a really good writer.

    That’s horrible.

JOSH BLOCK: But instead you’re trying to filibuster the question. Fundamentally, the Israeli army and the Israeli government arrest Palestinians who are engaged in terrorist activity. That’s a proven fact.

NORMAN FINKELSTEIN: No, I don’t think that’s a proven fact. It would be a proven fact if there were court trials.

JOSH BLOCK: It is. It is a proven fact.

I wish I could just bulwark my research papers at University with “It’s a proven fact”.

Anyone out there who wants to know more about the “conflict” should check (among other things, obviously) anything by Norman Finkelstein.

I was talking to some of the guys at my work earlier, and it seems probably because of the mass media slant, they think it’s fine for the Israelis to crush the Palestinians. Fucking Global.

“GAZA, Palestine — As Americans commemorated their annual celebration of independence from colonial occupation, rejoicing in their democratic institutions, we Palestinians were yet again besieged by our occupiers, who destroy our roads and buildings, our power stations and water plants, and who attack our very means of civil administration. Our homes and government offices are shelled, our parliamentarians taken prisoner and threatened with prosecution…”

“The United States regards Israel as virtually a militarized offshoot, and it protects it from criticism or actions and supports passively and, in fact, overtly supports its expansion, its attacks on Palestinians, its progressive takeover of what remains of Palestinian territory, and its acts to, well, actually realize a comment that Moshe Dayan made back in the early ’70s when he was responsible for the Occupied Territories. He said to his cabinet colleagues that we should tell the Palestinians that we have no solution for you, that you will live like dogs, and whoever will leave will leave, and we’ll see where that leads. That’s basically the policy. And I presume the U.S. will continue to advance that policy in one or another fashion.”

Reasonably interesting interview with Noam Chomsky, Mouin Rabbani and others on the escalation of violence in both Lebanon and Gaza.

For anyone in London, there is a public meeting this Monday 17 July 7pm at the
Friends Meeting House, Euston Road, WC1 (opp Euston Station)
