Violent Cyclists Viciously Attack and Brutalize Winnipeg Police Heroes!
Posted by Chris on 06/05/06 (Shite)
Sgt. Kelly Dennison of the Winnipeg Police Services (no need to imply who they actually serve, right?) stood in front of live microphones last week and didn’t hesistate to tell the local media a bald-faced lie: that our noble paragons of public safety, the Winnipeg Police, were attacked by cyclists participating in a bike-awareness rally.
It’s strange, because if you watch the footage recorded during the alleged “attack”, it actually indicates the exact opposite; that the Police attacked the cyclists (who were guilty of peacefully demonstrating an awareness of cycling as an alternate and sane means of urban transportation during this era of global warming and peak oil).
Aside from the reality that we are already living in an actual police-state, could there be any relation between the city police’s recent vigor vis-a-vis people advocating for social change from below and Rudolph “Adolph” Guiliani’s recent $260-a-plate cameo in Winnipeg where he met with the local douche-bag elite to strategize for a New City Order that doesn’t include input from anybody but the douche-bag elite?
Watch the video footage yourself and if Sgt. Dennison’s comments to the media don’t seem to add up, we encourage you to contact your city councillor to voice your concern and, more imporantly, show up on June 30th at 5 pm to Old Market Square Central Park in downtown Winnipeg to participate in and/or witness first-hand the next cycling-awareness ride.
21 fragments of dialogue thus far ...

If I understand correctly, the next ride will leave from Central Park, as have the previous three regular Critical Masses this year (excluding the Charging Bison ride).
I have a feeling the June 30th ride will be unmolested, as the police can’t afford to make themselves look even more foolish while high-profile community members are in attendance.

fucking elites. fuck them. but isnt a paragon a type of bird or something?
there’s a 1-speed bike song called: “any movement that forgets about class is a bowel movement.” hahahhahahaha quite fitting for this topic. i love that critical mass remains class-less.
Comment by C-Wipe on June 5th, 2006 at 1:56 pm:
ken,
the critical mass winnipeg site (http://members.shaw....nplease/critical.htm) indicates Old Market Square as the starting point. Has this changed for sure? Let us know.
I hope you’re right about the cops, but without broad public outrage against their abuse of authority in addition to the their easy access to a compliant local media (both the Free Press and Canwest Global sponsored Guiliani’s “more cops, more crackdown” speech here in winnipeg), they can pretty much afford to do whatever they want i’m afraid.
Comment by Ken on June 5th, 2006 at 4:24 pm:
Yeah, I that site is providing confusing information. I’ve emailed them to ask them to change it. At the April ride I consulted others and it was agreed that Central Park will be the starting point from then until further notice.
Perhaps there isn’t broad public outrage, I don’t have a clear sense. It’s hard to get the word out when the big media drop the story after a couple of days. I do know that two city councillors are planning to show up to the ride; it would be a media circus if they personally witnessed brutality.
Uptown printed the phone number of a police officer who wants to “work for a solution to the problem” for June 30th. I left a message saying the solution is to let us ride! There was no problem until the police showed up; they blocked traffic far more than we were.

wow fucking weird / scary.i’m gonna ramble incoherently as i vent and relax my bowels. obstruction of traffic this is fucking winnipeg, who cares about obstruction of traffic – where do people have to go? even if they had somewhere that was so-called important to go to, so what? do people get roughed up when traffic jams occur, should they? are we seriously not even allowed a token nearly unnoticable ripple of a protest to voice our opinion? we couldn’t vote on these issues ourselves so can we not participate in democracy some other way? what is the extent to our democracy? you’d pretty much have to be a political science student with alot of time, devotion and intellectual sources to get any know precisely whats going on with all the cigar smoke, veneer, masks complexities and contexts. I do maintain a high level of awareness not without effort and not without ill effects to my mood. I work, go to school, work a second job, work out and have a social life. All which society desperately wants me to have. Its nearly impossible to manage the current events and their global contexts without strain. In lieu of this strain i am faced with a few options. Ignore it all go with the flow, lube up my conscience whilst rocking back and forth in fetal-position with bulging eyes, doubt protesters and any checks and balences while applying cynisism ten-fold in relation to how i apply it to actual politicians. sacrifice my health for humane causes – for how or should i coach myself not to feel these disasters as though they were happening inside me? I do feel like the left is in dire straights. How can i jump headlong into the left when such confrontation and stalemate seem so permanent? How does the left operate within a exclusive money-centric planet with an economic plan that is so doubtful to so many.
All i know is that people really really need to start listening to their conscience and to each other. And i would suggest that anything the left proposes necessarily has to included everyone from the haves to the knuckle dragging meatatarians. Everyone needs to study their asses off to these days i think and i think more cross disciplinary work should be undertaken. Dont leave your enemies enemies. fuck rhetoric everywhere unless it litterally illustrates your factual point. hug every muslim you see. I long for the abolition of money and the militaristic / environmental invitations to the appocylpse and some human fucking decency.
sorry for the puddle of uselessness.

I’m afraid I can only articulate my feelings about all this charade with one single acronym; one, by the way, that Chris may certainly empathize with: M.D.C

Gertty: As a political science major who has no life, and, more importantly, a nerd who attends class religiously, the over-arching reason behind the insanity isn’t too difficult to understand. It all depends on how reductionist you want to be, I guess, but I’m going to blame neoliberal economics: Privatization, deregulation, and a desire to make more money regardless of the actual cost.
Fucking war-profiteers!
Comment by Phil on June 6th, 2006 at 6:53 pm:
Unbelieveable. The police pulled the same kind fo stunt here in Montreal, and got one of the best all-ages venues shut down. Surprise surprise, this was one of the main venues for punk-rock shows and activist gatherings in the city.
The police claim that a cab driver was assaulted, and they came to help and were attacked. Witnesses report that the alleged “cab driver” was a man in a business suit wearing sunglasses and an earpiece. They also say that no less than 50 police officers showed up for the 75 person crowd, and photographic evidence seems to confirm this.
What the hell is going on in the world? Police state indeed. Critical mass is more than just a fight against our country’s oil addiction, it’s a full-blown act of contesting police authority. Let’s get on our bikes, skateboards, longboards, and rollerblades, and thumb our noses at this kind of treatment.

That was quite insane… If Winnipeg wants to mimic banana republics or brutal dictatorships, that’s the way to go…
On a different note, when will we get more radio?
Comment by mikea on June 7th, 2006 at 8:31 am:
Undercover cops are the elite of scum.
I have a hard-on everytime one of them gets discovered.
Viva resistance! Viva cycling!
Comment by gertty on June 7th, 2006 at 6:03 pm:
hey…
yeah i agree it’s easy to get your feet wet but with politics through reductionism but i can’t help but think this wont amount to much (even though we should still take at what we can get) but i think that reductionism coupled with personal interests is what fucks everything up and allows things to stay fucked up.
anyway i was just posting because i thought it interesting / funny that greg graffins new solo project has memebers of the weakerthans in the line up. HA neat.

Comment by TB on June 19th, 2006 at 6:12 pm:
Odd because the police here in vancouver clear traffic for our critical mass rides and even ticket/arrest drivers and motorcyclists that try to break through the ride.
Comment by Aaron on June 29th, 2006 at 9:47 am:
One of the many points of critical masses here in Winnipeg is that were not a parade of cyclists, or that we are blocking traffic, the point is that we are traffic.
