American Fascists

American Fascists by Chris Hedges (hardcover)

Here in the West we are continually reminded that the religious fascists who seek to wrench away control of "our" secular institutions are brown people who speak alien languages and live in caves on the other side of the world, most notably Afghanistan.

Certainly a cursory reading of Taliban edicts is enough to confirm that their vision of how to organize society is at odds with any human who values free thought – to imagine that free-thinking North Americans would actively resist a hypothetical overthrow of their secular affairs by an invading Taliban militia risks cosmic understatement.

But of course such a scenario is barely worth thinking about. The Taliban exist on the other side of the planet and are such a caricature of religious fundamentalism that we can hardly bother to allocate the sliver of brain power required to conduct the predictable results of the thought-experiment.

But what if it were more than a thought-experiment? What if the religious fascists were already here among us, edicts in hand waiting for the moment to seize control?

Chris Hedges insists that's precisely the reality we now face:

All it will take is one more national crisis on the order of 9/11 for the Christian right to make a concerted drive to destroy American democracy. The movement awaits that crisis. At that moment they will reveal themselves for what they truly are: the American heirs to fascism.

The real threat is here, among us. American Fascists may be the most important book you read this year.
